Global Challenge

The global challenge is:
to overcome the problems caused by the vast quantities of waste materials that are the outcome of the production process, the aftermarket and the end of life of a motor vehicle.

This has already been recognised, in particular by the introduction of the “End of Life” vehicle Directive that is now in force across the European Union.

This Directive lays down detailed instructions as to how vehicles must be depolluted and disposed of when they are scrapped and has the weight of law.

The scope of the problem summarised:

  • At present, 85% of a vehicle’s weight must be recycled; by 2015, the amount of the vehicle which must be recycled will rise to 95%.
  • 1.98 billion vehicles are to be scrapped between 2006 and 2030.
  • It is estimated only 30% of the present end-of-life vehicles scrapped are covered by legislation.
  • Within countries covered by legislation, it is estimated only 50% of vehicles are scrapped legally.
  • At present rates, only 0.5 billion vehicles up to 2030 will be processed within the law.  Therefore a majority will be scrapped without any environmental controls.
  • The total materials scrapped between 2006 and 2030 will be ~3.7 billion tonnes.

Solutions need to be found. DRIVENet will be the medium via which these problems can be solved by providing education and research and enabling inter-organisational discussion.
